you don’t know what poor means
from where i stand
you all look middle class

growing up my moms was always scared of everything
they didn’t have a back up plan
no family or friends
just tiny asian immigrants in a big land
my daddy was a pastor
had no business plans

at any time he could lose his job
corean people substitute success for God
so if you don’t tell em what they wanna hear
find yourself and your kids thrown out on your ear

my mom was always tremblin inside
if she wasn’t so Christian
i think she woulda been a suicide

once a week we went to McDonalds
shared a bucket of fries and a waxy cup of water
i broke the rules she didn’t think we oughta
filled the tiny cup with watered down orange soda
which we sipped sparingly
to spare us the risk of further trips
i’d fill it up again
if i was feeling reckless

you don’t know what poor means
from where i stand
you all look middle class
after school you went to McDonalds or Del Taco
you could buy shit at the mall
name-brand shit had you walking tall

i got a collection
found it in the garage
threw it away cuz it made my heart hard
the tags from your clothes
with the name-brand logo
cut after you wore em out and threw the clothes away
when i think about my young self

it makes me crazy.
