Fear

Posted: February 24, 2011 in immigrant angst

When you grew up in America
But your greatest fear
Is that the police will beat you
And take you away

Costing your family
More than they have ever
Been able to save in their lives
Despite years of unending
Back-breaking
Honest work

Leaving your women unprotected
For the wolves to circle
And tear them down
One by one

When you grew up in America
And your daily fear
Is that despite your caution,
Your scrupulous efforts
To toe the line

They will take you
They will break you
They will scatter your family
Like ashes in the wind
While you are held fast
By their weapons and bars

When you grew up in America
And your greatest fear
Is that no matter what you do
They will still come
To take you away

That’s when you know
That nothing is free.
